About personal care analytics

Almost everything on Halo measures something a person cannot report. Eleven entries decode implicit consumer response through brain and body signals, nine detect a skin change before any irritation shows, and four read a scalp. Self-reported preference is what all of them are written against. On Halo it spans three groups: reading a consumer's response, detecting a skin response before it shows, and measuring a scalp.

Stage of development. Work on personal care analytics on Halo comes mostly from university programs. 43% of the solutions are in market. Co-development and sponsored research are the usual partnering routes, and about 34% of the solutions that state terms offer licensing.

Three trends in personal care analytics on Halo

Eleven platforms decoding the same thing. EEG appears in five entries, fNIRS in four, and they combine with PPG, EMG, eye tracking, GSR, functional magnetic resonance spectroscopy, exhaled breath, saliva and a whole-blood immune assay. Every one of them exists because a consumer panel reports what it thinks it feels, and the brief was to get underneath that.

Irritation measured before it is visible. Nine entries detect a skin change at subclinical level: laser Doppler flowmetry on microvascular response, three optical spectroscopies, a collagen-mimetic beacon that fluoresces where collagen has been disrupted, tape-stripped cytokines, impedance spectroscopy on the stratum corneum. Several name mild surfactant systems specifically, which is a formulation question asked clinically.

Taking the laboratory out. A handheld acoustic device, portable FT-Raman, spectral imaging on a phone, an at-home scalp microbiome swab, saliva biomarkers measured electrochemically, and thermal imaging calibrated up to laboratory reproducibility on a consumer device. What used to need a clinic now runs in a bathroom, and the calibration claim is where each one competes.

Frequently asked questions

What is personal care analytics?

Personal care analytics covers measuring how a person responds to a product, before they can say so. It spans neurophysiological platforms reading implicit consumer response through EEG, fNIRS and biomarkers, instruments that detect a subclinical skin response long before irritation is visible, and scalp and hair measurement including microbiome testing. Consumer goods companies and their research teams are the buyers.

What are examples of personal care analytics?

Three examples of personal care analytics solutions on Halo include:

  • EEG, fNIRS and PPG in one headband, reading emotion as a product is used. (Brain-Life)
  • Laser Doppler flowmetry picking up microvascular response to a surfactant. (Kansas State University)
  • Spectral imaging on a phone, reporting density and scalp condition. (Compolytics)

Which companies and suppliers are developing personal care analytics?

There are 219 organizations with personal care analytics solutions on Halo, 33 of them universities and research institutions. Among them are Brain-Life, University of Sussex, and Wichita State University. Most offer co-development or sponsored research.
