Background

We are a world leader in manufacturing of stretch-blowmolded PET (polyethylene terephthalate) bottles and containers. In stretch blow molding of PET containers, spindles are utilized to transport preforms through the oven of blow molding machines. Each spindle is custom-designed to match the specific neck diameter of the bottle being produced. A high-cavitation blow molder may require over 200 spindles, meaning that a full spindle set must be swapped out when switching to bottles with a different neck diameter. This results in significant downtime and operational inefficiencies.

Currently, bottle neck diameters may range from 18 mm to 82 mm, with the most common sizes falling between 26 mm and 38 mm. Developing a spindle design that could be modified to accommodate a range of bottle neck diameters would reduce costs and improve operational efficiency in PET bottle manufacturing.

What we're looking for

We are looking for spindle designs or mechanical design concepts wherein a single spindle may be adjusted to accommodate a wider range of bottle neck diameters. Preferably, the designed spindle should accommodate neck diameters from 26 mm to 38 mm. However, designs that accommodate a smaller range within this window are also of interest.

Our must-have requirements are:
  • Preform spindle accommodates ~2.4 mm in preform neck internal diameter (+/- 1.2 mm)

  • Adjustable feature accommodates ~2.2 mm of neck finish height differential

  • Reason to believe the preform spindle can survive 2 million manufacturing cycles

Our nice-to-have's are:
  • Preform spindle adjustable to accommodate neck finish internal diameters from 26mm to 38mm

Q.
Can you quantity with an approximate number the "significant downtime" per spindle? Do any other issues occur during swap over or safety processes that increase need for the product?
1
A.
Spindle changeover time can range from 30 minutes to 2 hours based on the platform and total number of spindles, and if any rebuild / repair of the spindles is needed. Platforms can have ~150-250 spindles depending on platform size / cavitation. Safety could be improved by eliminating a step and reducing operator interaction with the machine. Improperly installed, incorrect spindles, or underperforming spindles could result in unplanned downtime.

Q.
What machine(s) relevant to the process are you currently utilizing in the process? Does the spindle have to adjust automatically or is some intervention acceptable?
1
A.
For the must-have scenario outlined, the solution should require no intervention. For the nice-to-have scenario outlined, some intervention could be acceptable.

Q.
Are you open to a machine that makes the spindle swap automated within the existing sizes instead of focusing on spindle adaptability improvement (eg. similar to a 5 axis tool swap system)?
1
A.
Yes, we would be open. This could be a potential approach.

We will bid on the intent because from our evaluation it will be a cheaper option that a tool swap machine, but we will include some words about it as well.
