Background

We are a leading company in consumer product goods, dedicated to providing high-quality, nutritious products. Our focus is on high-meat formulations, which require precise drying techniques to maintain their nutritional value and quality. Traditional drying methods, such as hot-air drying by convection, often result in nutrient loss and undesirable changes in texture, aroma, and flavor due to extended heat processes, which negatively impact the product quality, consumer satisfaction, and production efficiency. We aim to identify novel drying solutions that can preserve the integrity of high-meat formulations while streamlining manufacturing performance by reducing production costs and lowering energy consumption. We invite innovators, researchers, and industry experts to collaborate with us and submit their groundbreaking ideas to revolutionize the drying process for high-meat pet food formulations.

What we're looking for

We are seeking technologies that can effectively reduce moisture levels to achieve shelf stability in high-meat food formulations, while preserving their nutritional value, texture, aroma, and flavor. The ideal solution should be sustainable, energy-efficient, and scalable for large-scale production.

Solutions of interest include:
  • Novel drying technologies (e.g., vacuum drying with or without microwave assistance, instantaneous controlled pressure drop, continuous gun puffing)
  • Technologies that enhance drying time and efficiency of traditional drying techniques (e.g., pulsed electric field or pressure-based pre-treatments)
  • Technologies that may be combined with conventional drying (e.g., hot-air convection) to enhance product quality and process efficiency
Our must-have requirements are:
  • Effectively reduces moisture in meat-based formulations (typically around 50–60% w/v) to a shelf-stable range (2-13% w/w, Aw< 0.65) in an amount of time characteristic of continuous industrial drying (40-90 minutes)
  • Maintains as much of the original nutrition, texture, flavor, and appearance of the food as possible
  • Demonstrates pathway to meet OSHA, NIOSH, and/or other nationally and internationally recognized food safety standards
Our nice-to-have's are:
  • Commercially available/scalable

  • Supports production throughput with a minimum of 2 tonnes/hr

  • Lower energy consumption, preferably 30-90% less than conventional hot-air drying

  • Supports or enhances sustainability claims

What's out of scope:
  • Classical convection technology
  • Radiation heat transfer technology
  • Freeze-drying
  • Any technology that may negatively impact flavor, aroma, or texture
Acceptable technology readiness levels (TRL):
Levels 4-9

Dear team, AZTI is a food innovation center with strong expertise in drying technologies, including microwave. My question is if we still can apply being based in Spain. We have a 1000 sq mt pilot plant.
