Background

We are seeking to produce peptides through fermentation. The ideal partner would be able to provide the expertise, technology, and support for a more complete solution.

However, we are eager to collaborate with experts in this space focused on each step of the process. These include the use of a host organism (preferably yeast) to produce peptides, scalable fermentation technology, downstream processing like the purification of the peptides, and technical support to integrate the platform into the production facilities.

What we're looking for

We are seeking fermentation platforms to generate a product containing functional peptide sequences of our interest. The ideal partner would accomplish more than one of our solutions of interest, but we will consider proposals addressing any of the following.

Solutions of interest include:
  • Cell lines/organisms capable of expressing/producing different peptides.
  • Scalable fermentation process with optimized conditions for the production of peptides.
  • Peptide purification methods (ideally yielding purity of ≥85 %).
  • High-throughput validation if desired peptides can be expressed using a certain host host organism.
Our must-have requirements are:
  • Targeted peptide yield >1 g/L.
  • Organism is capable of producing different peptide sequences.
  • Authentic termini targeted (no residual sequence tags from e.g., protease cleavage sites).
  • Technical support (e.g., secure availability of cell banks, provide technical advises, technology transfer to toller).
  • Exclusive on the background IP and foreground IP but only to the extent needed by us to market the product.
Our nice-to-have's are:
  • Yeast as the production organism.
  • Production by secretion.
  • Production of a single peptide sequence rather than a mixture of different peptides.
  • Expected fermentation size (batch): few cubic meters to several tens of cubic meters, (in own or in toller facilities).
What's out of scope:
  • Peptides that are obtained by chemical synthesis.
  • Technologies only proven at <5 L lab scale.
  • Technologies validated for only one specific peptide sequence.
Acceptable technology readiness levels (TRL):
Levels 4-6
What we can offer you
Eligible partnership models:
Sponsored research
Benefits:
Sponsored Research
Funding is proposal dependent, but an accepted proposal could expect support in the range of $25,000 - $100,000 (milestone dependent) with the potential for follow on funding.
Expertise
Partners will interact with a project lead to mutually develop a project plan and engage to ensure success. Partners will have access to experts as appropriate.

Q.
What are your intentions with IP?
1
A.
The inventor of the technology would retain IP. If the technology meets our objectives, licensing would be subject to mutually agreeable negotiation.

Thanks, but my question had been edited. My question was actually whether you require the proposed solution to be IP-protected (or protectable).
1
A.
Hello Marc, IP protection is not required, but there should be freedom to operate for commercial production of the peptides.

Q.
What sort of peptides is the company interested? Peptides with any specific biological functions?
1
A.
No limitation. We are interested primarily in the manner to produce peptides, scalable fermentation technology, downstream processing like the purification of the peptides, and technical support to integrate the platform into the production facilities.

Q.
It says preference will be given on yeast-based fermentation, what about bacterial fermentation or combination of hydrolysis and fermentation?
1
A.
We would be open to reviewing proposals that incorporated a combination of fermentation and hydrolysis. Our preference would be yeast based fermentation but bacterial fermentation may also be considered.

Q.
Could you share more info on what kind of peptides are these? What is the current stage of development? What scale of downstream processing expected? How stable these peptides are?
1
A.
Peptides of interest would be less than 50 amino acids and would have varying amino sequence compositions. Our interest is to identify partners who have technologies that would enable the production of a variety of peptides of interest.

Q.
Will you accept technologies proven in a 5 L bioreactor with less than 5 L of media? Or do you want at least 5 L of fermentation media? In the literature you will see many use 5 L bioreactors with 2-3 L of media. Thank you.

Q.
Hello, what's the use (or field of application) of the low molecular weight peptides to be expressed?
1
A.
The desired peptides would be topically applied.
