Background

We are a global developer of specialty food ingredients focused on improving functionality, stability, and quality across a range of consumer applications. Sensitive food ingredients, particularly those present in botanical extracts or natural colours, are widely used to deliver functional and sensory benefits in foods and beverages. Ensuring their stability throughout processing, storage, distribution, and consumption remains a persistent industry challenge, as many of these compounds are inherently vulnerable to environmental stressors.

Current approaches to maintaining ingredient stability typically rely on formulation adjustments, stabilizing additives, or protective packaging. While these strategies can provide partial protection, they are often insufficient in applications such as low-pH transparent beverages sold in transparent bottles, where exposure to acidic conditions, light, oxygen, or heat can drive degradation over time. This can result in a drastic reduction of the functional efficacy of the ingredient and/or visible colour fading, ultimately impacting product quality, consistency, and consumer perception.

Emerging advances in ingredient-level protection strategies, including optically compatible delivery systems, and supramolecular, colloidal, or encapsulation-based platforms, offer a promising opportunity to better mitigate degradation pathways. Adapting or extending these approaches could enable improved ingredient retention, enhanced visual and functional stability, and more consistent product performance throughout shelf life.

What we're looking for

We are looking for solutions to preserve the functionality and/or colour of sensitive active ingredients in low-pH transparent beverages throughout the intended shelf life. We are open to approaches originating from food, nutraceutical, pharmaceutical, or materials science fields, particularly if they do not compromise product clarity, sensory profile, or regulatory suitability.

Solutions of interest include:
  • Encapsulation and microencapsulation systems
  • Colloidal delivery systems
  • Biopolymer complexes and coacervates
Our must-have requirements are:
  • Composed of food-grade materials or demonstrates a credible pathway toward regulatory acceptance (e.g., GRAS or equivalent) in major markets such as Europe and the US
  • Maintains ingredient stability in low-pH systems (e.g., pH 2.8–3.5) over relevant shelf-life conditions (typically at least six months at ambient conditions), with target retention levels varying depending on the specific ingredient
  • Enables homogeneous distribution of active within the beverage, with no visible signs of precipitation or floating/phase separation
  • Maintains high beverage clarity, ideally achieving near-transparency (ideally <10 NTU; up to ~150 NTU may be acceptable depending on context)
  • Allows for reasonable use levels in beverages, with sufficient loading capacity to avoid excessive dosage requirements
  • No or negligible impact on aroma and taste of the beverage
Our nice-to-have's are:
  • Composed of exclusively natural ingredients not further modified by chemical or enzymatic reactions
  • Includes preliminary cost considerations or a clear pathway toward cost-effective production at scale
What's out of scope:
  • Systems with particle sizes well above 1 μm that would immediately result in turbidity or loss of transparency
  • Packaging concepts intended to hide product inhomogeneities
Acceptable technology readiness levels (TRL):
Levels 3-9

Benefits:
Sponsored Research
Funding is available to support feasibility studies, method development, or validation work, with up to $50,000 for a proof-of-concept. The exact level of funding will depend on the proposed work plan and project scope.
Expertise
Engage with internal experts in formulation science, encapsulation technologies, colloidal systems, ingredient functionality, sensory science, and regulatory strategy. Depending on the collaboration model, regular meetings may support experimental design, data interpretation, and development toward application-relevant systems.
Tools and Technologies
Partners may gain access to internal analytical and formulation capabilities (e.g., stability testing, particle characterization, and compositional analysis). Access may be provided through sample submission or on-site collaboration, depending on project scope.
Compounds and Reagents
Partners will receive representative ingredients or relevant materials to support feasibility studies and evaluation of proposed stabilization approaches. Availability will depend on project scope and regulatory considerations.
Data
Partners may receive feedback and selected data from internal testing to support iterative development and benchmarking of solution performance, subject to confidentiality agreements.
Networking
Opportunity to engage with cross-functional teams across R&D, product development, and application domains, supporting broader exploration of potential use cases and collaboration pathways.
Market Access
Successful solutions may have the opportunity to be further developed and integrated into commercial product pipelines. This could include potential collaboration agreements, supply or licensing opportunities, and access to global markets through established product platforms, depending on performance and strategic fit.
